Hire Fred

With ~20 years of industry experience I offer consulting and/or fractional CTO services in technology strategy, software development (Elixir, Ruby & JavaScript), software delivery, engineering leadership and startup advisory.

My name’s Fred Wu, I’m an experienced Elixir and Ruby developer who has worked on many commercial projects as well as having released dozens of open source Hex packages and Rubygems.

I’m currently working as a freelancing consultant. I enjoy hands-on software design, coding, strategy, product research, UI/UX and everything in between.

I am the founder of Persumi (the very website you’re on), Rizz.farm and FeedBun. I am also a contributor of Petal Framework, and was a contributor of Ruby on Rails and the Slim template language.

I’ve been using Elixir for ~10 years, ruby for over 15 years, lead and built multiple commercial B2B & B2C SaaS projects (some of them are mentioned in my CV). I’ve always been very hands on, and have worked with multiple tech stacks in the past, including JS/React, Node, PHP and a sprinkle of Golang and Clojure.

I’m full stack, but my strength is in software architecture, backend systems (Elixir and Ruby), DevOps (AWS and Fly.io) and machine learning (built my own ML libraries in Elixir, very familiar with the latest LLM trends, including agentic workflows).

I’ve also worked as a CTO, Head of Engineering, Tech Lead, etc, having lead teams of various sizes (up to 50+ devs). I now do fractional / consulting CTO gigs, providing tech and product strategies and roadmap work, etc if that interests you. Most recently I had helped an Australian holiday park business with ~$100mil revenue uplifting their tech capability and tech roadmap.

As you probably noticed I have quite a few projects on Github. Some of the more interesting ones are:

  • ExDoubleEntry, a double entry accounting library in Elixir built for two crypto-related projects.
  • Crawler, a high performance web crawler built in Elixir.
  • Simple Bayes, a naive bayes machine learning implementation in Elixir.
  • OPQ, a simple in-memory queue with worker pooling and rate limiting in Elixir.
  • Datamappify, an experimental project in Ruby building a “layer 0” ORM on top of ActiveRecord and Sequel.

If you think my skills and experience could add value to the project I’d love to chat more. You could reach me at [email protected]. Thanks!
